Most extractor fans are cleaned by replacing a filter every few months. That handles a fraction of the grease. The housing, the fan blades, and the grease traps collect a layer of solidified fat that no filter swap reaches. Over time, that build-up becomes a fire hazard, reduces airflow significantly, and turns the extractor into a source of smell rather than a solution for it.

Why it matters
Three reasons to clean your extractor.
Fire risk
Accumulated grease in the fan housing and ducting is flammable. A grease fire that reaches an uncleaned extractor is extremely difficult to control. Regular cleaning significantly reduces that risk.
Airflow and efficiency
A clogged extractor shifts a fraction of the air it should. Steam and cooking smells linger. The motor works harder than it needs to. A clean extractor runs the way it was designed to.
Smell
Old grease in a warm extractor housing generates its own smell every time the fan runs. Cleaning the housing and blades removes that source entirely, rather than masking it with a replacement filter.
Pricing
Two types of extractor.
Metal Mesh Filter Extractor
The most common type. Stainless steel or aluminium mesh filters sit beneath the canopy and trap grease before it reaches the fan. The mesh filters are removed and cleaned in the dip tank. The housing, grease traps, fan blades (where accessible), and external surfaces are degreased.
Mesh filters removed and dip tank cleaned
Fan housing degreased inside and out
Grease traps cleaned
Fan blades wiped where accessible
External canopy and vents degreased
£20
Cloth Filter Extractor
Recirculation extractors use a replaceable cloth or carbon filter that absorbs grease and odours. The old filter is removed and a new one is fitted as part of the service. The housing and external surfaces are cleaned at the same time.
Old cloth or carbon filter removed
New replacement filter fitted
Fan housing degreased
External canopy and controls cleaned
Extraction tested after reassembly
£30
Not sure which type you have? Check beneath the canopy: a metal grille is a mesh filter; a cardboard or felt pad is a cloth filter. If you are still unsure, mention it when booking and we will confirm.
What gets cleaned
The parts most people miss.
Filters
Mesh filters are soaked and cleaned in the dip tank. Cloth filters are replaced with a new one. Either way, the filter is not just rinsed: it is properly cleaned or replaced.
Grease traps
The grease trap channels that run between the filters and the fan housing collect the heaviest build-up. These are fully degreased rather than wiped over.
Fan blades
Where the fan unit is accessible, the blades are wiped down. Solidified grease on the blades unbalances the motor and reduces airflow.
Fan housing
The internal housing around the motor collects grease over time. This is the part most replaceable-filter cleaning misses entirely.
External canopy
The underside and sides of the canopy are degreased and polished. Stainless steel is polished with grain to remove smears.
Vents and ducting (where accessible)
Visible vent grilles and accessible ducting are cleaned where possible. Fully concealed ducting within the wall or ceiling is outside scope.
