Extractor Fan and Cooker Hood Cleaning: Why It Matters

Most people never clean their extractor fan or cooker hood, and that is a problem. A greasy, clogged extractor does not extract — it just recirculates dirty air around your kitchen while the grease build-up creates a potential fire risk directly above your hob.

What Happens When Extractors Are Not Cleaned?

Extractor fans and cooker hoods filter grease, steam, and cooking smells out of your kitchen air. Over time, the filters become saturated with grease. Once saturated, the extractor stops working effectively. Cooking smells linger, condensation builds up on windows, and grease starts settling on nearby surfaces (the tops of cabinets, walls, and the ceiling above the hob).

In severe cases, the grease build-up in the filter and ducting becomes a fire risk. Grease is flammable, and an extractor directly above a hot hob is exactly the wrong place to have a build-up of flammable material.

How Often Should You Clean Your Extractor?

Metal mesh filters should be cleaned every 2–3 months. You can usually put them in the dishwasher or soak them in hot soapy water.

Cloth and charcoal filters cannot be cleaned. They need to be replaced, typically every 3–6 months depending on usage. If your extractor has cloth filters and you cannot remember the last time they were changed, they are almost certainly overdue.
