How to Clean Your Oven Door Glass (Including the Inside Panels)

The greasy haze between your oven door glass panels is caused by steam and grease vapour that seeps between the panels during cooking. It cannot be cleaned from the front or inside of the oven because the panels are sealed. To clean between them, you need to partially or fully disassemble the door.
Why Does Grease Get Between the Glass?
Oven doors are made up of two, three, or sometimes four layers of glass. The outer panel and inner panel are the ones you can see and wipe. But between them, there are gaps (by design, for ventilation and insulation) where steam carrying tiny grease particles enters and condenses. Over months and years, this builds up into a brown or yellow haze that makes the door look dirty even when the inner and outer surfaces are clean.
Can You Clean It Yourself?
It depends on your oven model. Some ovens have a removable inner glass panel that slides out without tools. Check your oven manual for instructions specific to your model. If the inner panel slides out, you can clean between the layers relatively easily with warm soapy water.
For ovens where the door needs to be fully removed and split apart (which is most models, including Neff, Bosch, Siemens, AEG, Beko, and Rangemaster), the process is more involved. The door lifts off the hinges, screws are removed from the edges or top, and the panels separate. Reassembly needs to be done carefully to ensure the door seals correctly and sits square on the hinges.
When to Call a Professional
If your oven manual does not show how to remove the inner glass, or if you are not confident taking the door apart and putting it back together, a professional clean is the safer option. Incorrectly reassembled doors can sit unevenly, let heat escape, or in some cases crack if the glass is stressed.
Door glass restoration is included in every MINT oven clean. We strip the door apart, clean every panel individually, and reassemble it. It is often the single most dramatic part of the clean. Customers frequently tell us they had forgotten what their oven looked like when it was new.
